Seeing this, Shere Khan develops a newfound respect for him, and sees him as a "fellow creature of the jungle" from there on. Due to his hatred for humans initially, he tried to scare Mowgli away by roaring in his face, but Mowgli stubbornly roars back and stands his ground. In it, he does not kill for sport and makes sure that the "Laws of the Jungle" are not broken. In the 1994 live-action film, Shere Khan is portrayed as a more sympathetic character and portrayed by a real tiger. He was a nominal villain who took occasional enjoyment in driving small companies out of business to expand his own enterprise, but sometimes allied with the heroes when it suited him. In The Jungle Book 2, as well as the 1990 Disney Afternoon series TaleSpin, Shere Khan's voice was provided by the late Tony Jay. It is unknown, however, if he survived and found a way to escape the pit, or stayed there until he starved to death. His plan, once again, fails he plummets onto a stone slab in a lava pit and trapped under the head of a giant tiger statue, rather than falling directly into the lava and perishing in it. The only creature who looks up to him is Tabaqui, a cowardly and despised golden jackal (who is sometimes portrayed as a hyena in some versions of The Jungle Book, including the 2018 film Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle). Despite this condition, Shere Khan is arrogant and regards himself as the rightful lord of the jungle. In the original stories by Kipling, Shere Khan was depicted as being born with a crippled leg and was derisively named Lungri ("The Lame One") by his mother.
